ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 30, 2024) ~ The state of Maryland is mourning the loss of Hagner Mister, the sixth Agriculture Secretary for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Mister served in this role from January 2001 to January 2003 and was also a Deputy Secretary for three years prior.
Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks expressed his sadness at the news, stating, "I was incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of former Secretary Hagner Mister. Hagner led the Department with grace and dedication, and Maryland's farmers benefited from his leadership."
Mister was born in 1934 and spent his entire life in Calvert County. He graduated from Calvert County High School before serving in the Maryland National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves. He was also actively involved in his community, serving on the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, Board of Education, and Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.

In 2020, Mister received the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service from then Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot.
Aside from his professional achievements, Mister's greatest joy was being a husband to Helen Ann and a father to their three children. He also had six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends on January 1, 2025 at Rausch Funeral Home-Owings from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on January 2, 2024 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick.
