The community has updated its Facebook page title to reflect new Maryland Writers Association communications guidance while continuing to support local writers with accessible updates and creative connection.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Marylandian -- The Prince George's County writing community has updated the title and description of its Facebook presence in response to newly clarified communications guidance from the Maryland Writers' Association (MWA). The page, originally created to support local writers and share timely updates, will now operate as the Prince George's County Writers Community.
Purpose and Context for the Update
The page was created during a period of limited statewide social media activity, when writers across several counties needed more consistent communication. The main MWA Facebook page has since become more active, reflecting a renewed focus on statewide engagement. With this shift, MWA leadership clarified that chapter‑level pages should not use the MWA name unless formally established through communications oversight. The Prince George's County page has been retitled to align with this guidance while continuing to serve local writers.

Continued Sharing of MWA Information
Although the page will no longer identify itself as an official MWA chapter page, it will continue to repost public updates from the Maryland Writers' Association's main Facebook page so county writers remain connected to statewide activities. For transparency, the page's About and Notes sections will include a disclaimer identifying it as an Unofficial Prince George's County MWA‑affiliated Chapter FB Group.
Legality of Using "Unofficial"
Facebook allows community groups to reference an organization as long as they do not claim official status or imply authorized representation. Pages may not use the word official without formal recognition, but they may identify themselves as unofficial, fan‑run, community‑run, or volunteer‑run. This meets Facebook's requirement that page names accurately reflect affiliation and avoid misleading users. Using "unofficial" is compliant and appropriate.
Commitment to Writers and Community Growth
The Prince George's County Writers Community remains dedicated to:

In its unofficial capacity, the community encourages readers and authors to explore www.marylandwriters.org for statewide programs, membership information, and organizational updates.
