ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 7, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Board of Public Works has taken a significant step towards preserving the state's agricultural heritage by approving 19 new easements through the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation. These easements will add approximately 1,674 acres of prime farmland to the already protected land across ten counties including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, Washington, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne, Somerset, Charles, and Worcester.

The decision to invest in the preservation of farmland was praised by Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks. He stated that this effort not only safeguards the state's agricultural legacy but also ensures a sustainable future for local communities. By protecting these new easements, Maryland is taking a significant step towards protecting the environment and promoting food security for generations to come.

The Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation was established in 1977 as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Its main goal is to purchase agricultural preservation easements from willing farmers in order to protect prime farmland and woodland indefinitely. This commitment helps to maintain the state's agricultural landscape and support local food production while sustaining rural communities and their livelihoods.

This latest initiative is part of Maryland's ongoing efforts towards conservation. It follows the achievement of the 30% by 2030 goal outlined in the Maryland the Beautiful Act passed by the Maryland General Assembly in 2023. These newly approved easements will also contribute towards the next goal of conserving 40% of state land by 2040.

For more information on these new easements or the work of the foundation, interested parties can contact Executive Director Michelle Cable at (410) 841-5860 or via email at michelle.cable@maryland.gov. With this latest development, Maryland continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving its natural resources for future generations.
