Maryland: Cost-Share Grants for Spring Manure Transport and Injection Available

Trending...
ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 20, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture is reminding farmers that they have the opportunity to apply for cost-share funding to assist with the transportation of manure to crop fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels. This funding also includes grants to help offset the cost of injecting liquid manure into the soil, which can prevent nutrient runoff and reduce odors. With March 1st quickly approaching, farmers are encouraged to take advantage of these resources as they resume spreading manure in accordance with their nutrient management plan recommendations.

The program offers a variety of benefits for farmers who participate. Those transporting poultry manure can receive up to $28 per ton for qualifying fields or alternative use projects that can safely utilize the product. For dairy and livestock manure, cost-share grants are available covering up to 87.5% of eligible costs. Both FastTrack and standard transport options are available for both poultry and dairy/livestock manure.

However, it is important for farmers to note that when transporting poultry manure, they should visit the Maryland Department of Agriculture's website to check for any Control Orders from the Secretary of Agriculture regarding safe handling, storage, and transport practices. These orders are in place to mitigate the risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

For those interested in applying for FastTrack (haul now, apply later) applications for poultry and dairy/livestock manure, the application can be downloaded from the department's website. If a farmer does not qualify for FastTrack, they can contact their local soil conservation district to apply for standard grants. However, it is important to note that pre-approval is required before any manure is transported or injected.

Farmers should also keep in mind that all projects must be completed by September 9th, 2025 if they plan on transporting manure this spring and summer. Claims for payment must be submitted by October 9th, 2025 to the department's Conservation Grants Office.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture's Conservation Grants Program is responsible for administering these manure transport and injection grants. In order to apply, farmers must be in good standing with the program and in compliance with Maryland's nutrient management regulations. For more information on finding manure or contacting a poultry manure broker, farmers can visit the Delmarva Chicken Association's website at www.littr.io. They can also contact the Manure Management Program at 410-841-5864 for further assistance.

With these cost-share funding opportunities available, the Maryland Department of Agriculture hopes to encourage farmers to take proactive steps in managing their manure and reducing its impact on the environment. By working together, they can ensure a sustainable future for both their farms and the surrounding communities.
