ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 6, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced that the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) is now accepting applications for its 2027 grant program. This program aims to provide funding for research, education, and promotional activities that will further develop Maryland's horse industry.

Funded through the Maryland Feed Fund, which collects $6.00 from each ton of horse feed sold in the state, these grants have been supporting various projects since its establishment in 2002. To date, nearly $700,000 has been awarded to over 450 projects that benefit horses, horse owners, equine organizations, educational institutions, and local communities. The deadline to apply for the 2027 grant program is October 5, 2026.

According to Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks, "Maryland's horse industry is an essential part of our state's agricultural heritage and economy." He further adds that the MHIB Grants Program is a wise investment in the future of this industry as it helps organizations educate, innovate and promote the many opportunities it provides. "Every project we support helps ensure Maryland remains a premier destination for horses, horse owners and equine businesses," Atticks stated.

Interested applicants are encouraged to review the 2027 Grant Guidelines before submitting their proposals. The funding requests should not exceed $3,000 with an average award amount of around $850. In 2025 alone, the MHIB awarded almost $25,000 in funding to 36 projects across the state.

Eligible parties for these grants include nonprofit organizations, equine associations, clubs, businesses, licensed farms and stables, educational institutions and local and state government entities. Projects that demonstrate collaboration and strengthen Maryland's equine industry will receive additional consideration.

To apply for these grants, interested parties must submit their proposals through the online portal found on the Maryland Horse Board Grants Program webpage. The grant recipients will be announced in January 2027, and all funded projects must be completed by June 30, 2027, with final reports received by MHIB.
