Life Changing Cataract-Removal Surgery Helps Chonk Regain His Vision

GREENBELT, Md. - Marylandian -- Chonk is a young Hound/Terrier mix who came to the local dog rescue and adoption organization, Partnership for Animal Welfare (PAW) from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was staying in a PAW partner kennel while waiting to find his forever home when volunteer walkers noticed that he was occasionally bumping into walls and falling off of curbs. An exam by an animal eye specialist confirmed that Chonk had severely reduced vision because of cataracts, even at one year of age.

PAW volunteers and willing fosters teamed up to help Chonk prepare for his vision-restoring surgery and nurse him through a six-week recovery. This was no small task. Pre-surgical care required multiple eye drops every day in order to reduce eye inflammation. Post-surgical care required multiple people, coordinated to carefully administer oral medications and eye drops, every few hours. Additionally, Chonk had to remain relatively calm (no running, no playtime, no barking) to avoid popping any of the delicate stitches in his new  and improved eyes.

PAW's volunteers' efforts will be rewarded this week when Chonk's stitches will be removed. We know the surgery was a success as he is already trying to chase squirrels and birds on his walks, and now PAW volunteers will help Chonk acclimate to his new life and explore the bright world that surrounds him!

PAW is actively seeking a new foster or adopter for Chonk as he completes his recovery and settles into a life with vision. To learn more about Chonk and other adoptable dogs and cats, please visit PAW at: https://www.paw-rescue.org
