Spectrum Control Announces New Direct RF Extension to SCi Blocks Family

Trending...
FREDERICK, Md., May 8, 2024 ~ Spectrum Control Inc. has recently announced the launch of a groundbreaking new addition to its SCi Blocks family of miniature, modular, and intelligent RF+Digital™ system building blocks. This new DirectRF+™ module is set to revolutionize the industry by allowing customers to quickly and easily deploy configurable mission-ready RF front-ends and high-speed digital signal conversion with minimal performance risk.

Designed for a wide range of aerospace and defense applications, the new DirectRF+™ module offers an integrated solution that can be deployed in both existing and emerging defense platforms. It also expands the technology to smaller platforms such as UAVs and expendables. With user-enabled switching capabilities, this SOSA-aligned 3U VPX module allows for seamless transition from a radar mission to a SIGINT gathering mission to Electronic Warfare (EW), all in one compact package. This combination of high-fidelity RF signal handling and integrated digital conversion provides system developers with unparalleled multi-mission flexibility and unmatched size/density.

The new DirectRF+™ module leverages Altera® Agilex™ 9 FPGAs, which enable direct digitization of eight RF inputs and eight RF outputs at sample rates up to 64 Gsps with ultra-low converter interface latency. This FPGA technology offers a significant improvement in digital modularity and interoperability in RF systems by including analog-to-digital conversion and processing.

According to Ian Dunn, chief technology officer at Spectrum Control, "The promise of integrating Altera's Agilex™ 9 SoC FPGA Direct RF-Series is upon us, as it has the potential to radically alter the size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) of future ISR missions in the electromagnetic spectrum." He further explains that their SCi Blocks family allows for rapid deployment of new wideband RF+Digital systems thanks to its modularity and channel control architecture designed specifically for managing the integration of digital and analog technologies into a high-performance, single-slot solution. This also opens up opportunities for new capabilities and supports new mission parameters as critical functions are shrunk to make room for more software functionality and the growing application of AI.
