ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 1, 2024) ~ Annapolis, MD - Governor Wes Moore has officially declared October as "Maryland Apple Month" for the second year in a row, as announced by the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Maryland's Best program. This month-long celebration aims to promote and support local apple orchards while also encouraging Marylanders to get out and explore their state.
One exciting addition to this year's "Take a Bite of Maryland" promotion is the introduction of Apple Buddy, a fun character designed to engage and excite people about visiting apple orchards. To participate, individuals can download and print Apple Buddy from the marylandsbest.net website, decorate him, and take a photo with him at their favorite orchard. These photos can then be shared on Maryland's Best social media or via email for a chance to win apple-themed prizes. Winners will be randomly selected throughout October, and more information on how to enter and contest rules can be found on marylandsbest.net.

According to Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks, visiting orchards is not only a great way to celebrate the season but also an opportunity to connect with local farmers and learn more about agriculture. With over 20 different apple varieties grown in Maryland, including Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Evercrisp, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Maryland Apple Promotion Board's website provides more information on these varieties and where they can be found.
Maryland is home to 205 farms that grow apples, many of which are open to the public for pick-your-own experiences and other agri-tourism activities. To find local orchards offering pick-your-own apples and learn about events happening throughout October in honor of Apple Month - including events at Enoch Pratt Library - individuals can visit the Maryland's Best website.
For further inquiries about Maryland Apple Month or the "Take a Bite of Maryland" promotion, please contact Kristin Hanna, Maryland's Best Director of Special Projects, at marylands.best@maryland.gov or 410-991-3968. Let's all join in on the fun and support our local apple orchards this October!
