ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 19, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced plans to expand mosquito control services in certain areas of the state due to concerns over potential mosquito-borne diseases. In cooperation with the Prince George's County Health Department, MDA will be conducting Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying in Hyattsville on the evening of Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The spraying will take place after 9:00 p.m. ET and will cover a specific area as shown on the map below. In case of inclement weather, the spraying will be rescheduled for Friday, August 21, 2026. It is important to note that any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended during this time.

To ensure the safety and effectiveness of the spraying, MDA Mosquito Control Program personnel will be using a permethrin-based solution that has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in public health mosquito control programs. While this solution is not expected to pose any unreasonable risks to human health, MDA recommends that residents avoid outdoor activities during the spraying as a precautionary measure.

MDA also advises residents to take necessary precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. This includes wearing long, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, using insect repellents according to product labels, avoiding mosquito-infested areas during peak activity times (between dusk and dawn), and regularly cleaning bird baths and pet food/water bowls. Additionally, it is recommended to install and inspect window and door screens in homes and stables and remove or empty any water-holding containers.
