ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 5, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture is urging farmers to take advantage of the financial assistance available through the state's 5 Million Trees Program. This program aims to support tree-planting initiatives that can not only increase farm income, but also improve soil and herd health, and protect local streams and natural resources.
Through the department's tree-planting incentives, farmers can implement soil health and agroforestry practices that combine farming and forestry to create healthier conditions for people, animals, and crops. This includes the opportunity to generate income by planting nut and berry trees. Eligible participants may receive up to 100% cost-share for selected practices, as well as a one-time bonus payment of $1,000 per acre for establishing riparian forest buffers.
These efforts align with Maryland's goal of planting 5 million trees by 2031 in order to capture atmospheric carbon and enhance public health. The eligible tree-planting and agroforestry practices include riparian forest buffers, hedgerow plantings, windbreaks, silvopasture, tree and shrub establishment, and alley cropping.

Riparian forest buffers are trees and shrubs planted along streams to act as natural filters. Hedgerow plantings serve as living fences of trees and shrubs that attract wildlife and boost biodiversity. Windbreaks are rows of trees planted near farm production areas to filter the air and reduce odors. Silvopasture involves integrating trees with grazing livestock in order to improve herd and soil health. Tree and shrub establishment provides environmental benefits while alley cropping involves growing crops in wide alleys between rows of trees to improve soil health.
Farmers and agricultural landowners who are interested in learning more about these incentives can visit the department's website for more information. Additionally, free technical help and application assistance is available through local soil conservation districts for most projects.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture is committed to supporting sustainable farming practices and promoting the health of both the environment and the agricultural industry. With these tree-planting incentives, farmers have the opportunity to not only improve their own operations, but also contribute to the overall health and well-being of their communities.
