New iOS and web app photographs student homework and renders solutions as handwritten PDFs with hand-drawn graphs and circuit diagrams, powered by Claude Opus 4.6
BALTIMORE - Marylandian -- BALTIMORE, MD - A Johns Hopkins University computer science student has launched Scrawl AI, an iOS and web application that solves student homework and renders the answers as handwritten PDFs. The app addresses a gap in the education technology market where existing AI tools produce typed text that cannot be submitted for handwritten assignments.
Scrawl AI operates on a simple workflow. Students photograph their homework, the application's AI solves each problem step by step, and users download a PDF that looks authentically handwritten. The solution includes hand-drawn graphs, circuit diagrams, plots, and matrices rendered directly in the handwritten style.

The core innovation is the rendering engine, which applies natural variation to every character including rotation, spacing, and baseline drift. Users can draw their own characters to build a custom handwriting font that matches their real writing, or choose from preset styles. This distinguishes Scrawl AI from font-based text-to-handwriting converters where every repeated letter appears identical.
"I built Scrawl AI because AI could solve my homework but couldn't produce output I could actually turn in," said Guohan Zhang, founder and developer. "General-purpose AI gives you typed text. Handwriting converters just swap fonts. Nothing covered the full pipeline."
The application is powered by Claude Opus 4.6 from Anthropic, enabling graduate-level accuracy across more than 50 subjects including calculus, linear algebra, physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, economics, and humanities. The rendering pipeline uses LaTeX and TikZ for mathematical notation and diagrams, then passes through a custom glyph compositing engine that produces the handwritten appearance.

Scrawl AI offers a free tier with three solves and watermarked output. The Pro Weekly plan is $6.99 and the Pro Annual plan is $69.99 with a seven-day free trial. Pro plans include unlimited solves, custom handwriting, no watermarks, and support for up to 20 pages per submission.
The iOS app is available on the App Store. The web application runs at scrawlai.app.
