Governor Wes Moore Proclaims October 2025 as ‘Maryland Horse Month’

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 30, 2025) ~ ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 30, 2025) - As the Fifth Annual Maryland Horse Month approaches, Governor Wes Moore has officially declared October 2025 as a month to honor Maryland's horse industry and its significant contributions to the state's economy, culture, and open space preservation. In celebration of this proclamation, the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB), the Maryland Office of Tourism, and various equestrian partners across the state have come together to showcase over 60 horse-related events featuring more than 5,000 horses, ponies, and donkeys. These events are expected to attract over 100,000 spectators and garner millions of online views.

Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks emphasized the importance of the state's thriving horse industry as a crucial part of Maryland agriculture. He encouraged all Marylanders to take part in at least one horse-related event during October Horse Month.

Some major highlights of this year's celebrations include the Capital Challenge Horse Show at Prince George's Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro from September 25th to October 5th, Jim McKay Maryland Million Day at Laurel Park Racetrack on October 11th, and The Washington International Horse Show at Prince George's Equestrian Center from October 20th to October 26th. Other notable events include Loch Moy Farm's USEA Championships on October 11th at Tuckahoe ED, Jousting Championship Finals on October 4th and 11th, rodeos, trail rides, farm tours, Steeplechase races, Thoroughbred Racing, Standardbred Racing, therapeutic riding exhibitions, driving clubs and more.

This year also marks the official launch of MarylandHorsePark.org - a new digital hub developed with support from the Maryland Office of Tourism. This website serves as a central platform for showcasing the Maryland Horse Park System - a network of equestrian destinations across the state including Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, Prince George's Equestrian Center, the Maryland Horse Library & Education Center, the soon-to-be-renovated Pimlico Race Course, Horse Discovery Centers and more. Visitors can access trail guides, event calendars, educational resources, and equestrian tourism itineraries to explore Maryland's horse country from the Assateague Ponies on the Eastern Shore to trail riding in Garrett County.

According to Anne Litz, Executive Director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, October is the perfect month to celebrate Maryland's love for horses. She encourages everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to experience world-class competitions, scenic trails, and local farms that showcase the joy that horses bring to our state and souls.
