Retired Computers from Barcoding Will Offer Crucial Digital Connectivity for Families
BALTIMORE - Marylandian -- Barcoding, Inc., the leader in supply chain efficiency, accuracy, and connectivity, has partnered with the nonprofit PCs for People - Maryland to repurpose its retired computers and technology to benefit digital inclusion efforts in the state.
Barcoding's computers will be refurbished at PCs for People - Maryland's East Baltimore facility, receive a fresh installation of Windows 10 and be delivered to low-income households. Non-working devices, along with additional electronic equipment and networking hardware will be recycled, with the proceeds benefiting the organization's digital literacy programs, technical support services and subsidized internet access.
Since October, Barcoding has already donated more than 40 computers through the partnership.
"As Supply Chain Geeks, we know that having access to the right technology, properly deployed, creates transformative opportunities," said Martin Jack, Chief Technology Officer at Barcoding. "As part of our community commitment, we've always taken great care to minimize our environmental footprint and leverage our resources for social responsibility. Being able to repurpose our computers with PCs for People - Maryland is a win-win."

Thanks to PCs for People's EPA-recognized zero-waste policy, Barcoding's devices will stay out of landfills and be recycled according to the highest industry standards. Barcoding's devices will be securely wiped according to PCs for People's NAID AAA certified methods of data destruction, meeting or exceeding DOD, NIST, and HIPAA standards.
"Since our clients trust us to manage their device platforms and maintain continuous improvement goals, it was essential that we partnered with an organization that takes data protection seriously," said Jack. "We were particularly impressed with PCs for People's NAID AAA certification, which demonstrates their commitment to privacy and best practices."
Founded in 2008 in St. Paul, MN, PCs for People has provided refurbished computers to more than 300,000 individuals in five cities, connected more than 120,000 people to low-cost internet and diverted eight million pounds of e-waste from landfills. In 2020, the organization opened its Baltimore location to close the digital divide in a state where 400,000 households lack computers and internet.

"Barcoding's commitment will contribute to vital efforts to provide technology to low-income families in Maryland," said Gary Bonner, Executive Director of PCs for People - Maryland. "A computer or wireless hotspot isn't just a piece of technology — it's transformative, offering individuals access to the employment opportunities, government services and education that increasingly rely on digital connectivity. We hope other companies in the region follow Barcoding's lead in repurposing their retired technology for the benefit of the community."
