The answer is not always as straightforward as product listings and specifications make it appear.

The Four-Inch Rule, Without the Legal Snooze

According to Section 307.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards...just kidding. In plain English, a hand dryer mounted along a walkway generally cannot stick out more than four inches from the wall. Why? Because someone using a cane may not detect a higher-mounted object before bumping into it—and nobody wants a restroom visit to become an obstacle course.

If the dryer is deeper than four inches, it usually needs to be recessed into the wall. Mounting height, reach, floor space and local codes still matter, so confirm the final installation with the project's architect or code authority.

2. World Dryer SLIMdri: Best for Universal-Voltage Projects

The World Dryer SLIMdri combines a slim 3.9-inch profile with universal-voltage capability.

Universal voltage can be especially valuable on national rollouts, renovations and projects where electrical conditions differ between locations. Instead of specifying different models for different voltages, project teams can use one compatible hand dryer across a wider range of installations.

Its narrow profile and distinctive appearance can make it particularly well suited to corporate offices, hospitality projects, higher-end retail spaces and design-conscious commercial interiors.

5. ASI Turbo Swift: Best Value-Minded Stainless-Steel Option

The ASI 0192 Turbo Swift offers a compact, stainless-steel hand dryer for projects balancing accessibility, durability and budget considerations.

The Turbo Swift is four inches deep, automatically activated and equipped with adjustable sensor and heat settings. American Specialties identifies the model as ADA compliant and lists its depth at four inches.

Its satin stainless-steel cover also allows it to coordinate with grab bars, dispensers, waste receptacles and other commercial restroom accessories frequently specified in the same finish.

Is the Popular XLERATOR ADA Compliant?

This is where many project teams make a costly specification mistake.

The standard surface-mounted XLERATOR hand dryer is not sufficiently slim to meet the four-inch projection requirement in a typical circulation-path installation by itself.

That does not mean the XLERATOR cannot be used in an ADA-compliant restroom. It means the installation generally requires the complementary Excel Dryer 40502 recess kit.

"The XLERATOR is one of the most recognized high-speed hand dryers in commercial construction, but it should not automatically be shown as a standard surface-mounted ADA dryer," the Hand Dryer USA team said. "The recess kit needs to be included in the specification."

ADA Compliance Depends on the Complete Installation
