Maryland: PUBLIC NOTICE: Unscheduled Mosquito Control Activity in Baltimore County

Trending...
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 3, 2024) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Baltimore County Health Department, has announced plans to expand mosquito control services in response to a public health concern over the potential spread of mosquito-borne diseases. On the evening of September 4, 2024, Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying will take place in Parkville near the intersection of Harford Road and Edgewood Avenue.

The spraying is scheduled to occur after 7:30 p.m. and will be conducted by personnel from MDA's Mosquito Control Program. In the event of inclement weather, the spraying will be rescheduled for the next available evening. Any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended.

To combat adult mosquitoes, MDA will use a permethrin-based solution that has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing unreasonable risks to human health. However, as a precautionary measure, MDA recommends that residents avoid outdoor activities during spraying.

While not all mosquitoes carry diseases, MDA advises residents to take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include wearing long, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, using insect repellents according to product labels, avoiding mosquito-infested areas during peak activity periods (between dusk and dawn), installing and maintaining window and door screens in homes and stables, regularly cleaning bird baths and pet food/water bowls, and removing or emptying any water-holding containers.

To stay updated on any unscheduled spray events or other timely information about mosquito control in Maryland, all residents are encouraged to follow MDA's Facebook page @MdAgDept. Routine spray program schedules for each county can also be found on the program's website.
