CALEDON, Ontario - Marylandian -- As temperatures drop across the Greater Toronto Area, Toronto-based home service company Service Guys is reminding homeowners that fall is the most important time to have chimneys, fireplaces, wood stoves and dryer vents inspected and cleaned before they are used daily through the winter.

Months of inactivity over the summer often leave heating systems in poor condition. Creosote and soot build up inside flues, birds and small animals nest in chimneys, and chimney caps and liners deteriorate. Once a fireplace or wood stove is lit again, these issues can lead to poor draft, smoke entering the home, chimney fires and carbon monoxide exposure.

"Most of the problems we find in the fall are completely preventable," said Kyryl Buniakin, lead technician at Service Guys. "A chimney that hasn't been cleaned or inspected since last winter can hide heavy creosote, a cracked liner or a blocked flue. One visit before the first fire is far easier, cheaper and safer than dealing with an emergency in January."

Service Guys provides professional chimney cleaning in Toronto that covers a full inspection of the firebox, stove pipe and chimney, removal of soot and creosote, and safety testing. For homes with older or damaged systems, the company also handles chimney top repair and liner replacement, including ceramic liner replacement, aluminum liner installation for gas fireplaces, chimney cap and crown replacement, and waterproofing.

The company also offers WETT inspections at all three levels, from a Level 1 visual inspection to Level 3 invasive inspections, with documented reports. WETT inspections are commonly requested by home buyers, sellers and insurance providers, and after a wood-burning appliance is installed or modified.

Dryer vents are the second priority for the season. Lint builds up quickly as dryers run more often in colder months, which restricts airflow, makes the dryer work harder and increases fire risk. Service Guys provides dryer vent cleaning with camera inspection, deep cleaning and animal protection installation, as well as dryer repair.

Homeowners are advised to book an inspection if they notice any of the following: a strong smoky or campfire smell when the fireplace is not in use, smoke drifting into the room, black flakes or debris in the firebox, sounds of animals in the chimney, clothes taking longer than one cycle to dry, or a dryer that is hot to the touch.
