ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 30, 2026) ~ Maryland farmers can apply for cost-share grants to help cover the cost of transporting manure to fall crop fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels. Funding is also available to inject liquid manure into soil, a practice that can reduce nutrient runoff and odors.
All transport and injection work must be completed by Dec. 15, 2026. Claims for livestock and dairy manure must reach the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Conservation Grants Program by Jan. 15, 2027. Poultry manure claims are due within 40 days of the final transport.
New this fall, Fast Track Livestock applications must include organic nutrient recommendations from the receiving farm's Nutrient Management Plan. Applicants should submit only the plan pages covering the fields listed in the application, not the full plan.

Farmers may receive up to $28 per ton to transport poultry manure to eligible fields or to alternative-use projects that can safely use the material. Dairy and livestock manure transport grants can cover up to 87.5% of eligible costs. Fast Track and standard transport options are available for both poultry and dairy or livestock manure.
The program also offers up to $45 per acre toward liquid manure injection costs. Poultry manure is not eligible for injection funding because of its low moisture content.
Farmers can apply for the "Haul Now, Apply Later" Fast Track option by downloading an application from the Manure Transport Program website. Those who do not qualify for Fast Track may apply for standard grants, but must receive approval before transporting or injecting manure. Applications for standard grants are available through local Soil Conservation Districts.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture administers the grants. Applicants must be in good standing with the program and comply with state nutrient management regulations. A list of poultry manure brokers is available on the department's website.
