ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 6, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Board of Public Works has taken a significant step towards preserving the state's agricultural heritage by approving 14 new easements through the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation. These easements will protect approximately 1,474 acres of prime farmland across ten counties including Baltimore, Caroline, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, St. Mary's, Talbot, and Washington.

According to Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks, this decision reflects the state's commitment to supporting local farmers and ensuring food security for present and future generations. "Protecting our farmland is crucial for maintaining Maryland's agricultural legacy," said Atticks. "By making this investment today, we are setting the foundation for a sustainable tomorrow."

The Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation was established in 1977 as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Its main focus is to purchase agricultural preservation easements from willing farmers in order to safeguard prime farmland and woodlands indefinitely. These newly approved easements will play a vital role in maintaining the state's agricultural landscape and supporting local food production while also sustaining the livelihoods of rural communities.

This latest initiative is part of Maryland's ongoing efforts towards conservation following the achievement of the 30% by 2030 goal outlined in the Maryland the Beautiful Act passed by the General Assembly in 2023. These easements will also contribute towards the next goal of conserving 40% of state land by 2040.

For more information on these new easements or the work of the foundation, interested parties can contact Executive Director Michelle Cable at (410) 841-5860 or via email at michelle.cable@maryland.gov. With these additional protections in place, Maryland can continue to preserve its rich agricultural history and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
