ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 28, 2025) ~ ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced that they are seeking Maryland chefs and restaurants to participate in the Governor's Buy Local Cookout by submitting original recipes using local Maryland ingredients. The annual event, which will take place on July 17 from 5-7pm at the department's headquarters in Annapolis, is part of the statewide Buy Local Challenge Week. This week encourages all Marylanders to incorporate at least one local product into their daily meals.
According to Governor Moore, the Buy Local Cookout is not just a celebration of delicious food, but also a tribute to what makes Maryland great. He stated, "Maryland's farmers, watermen, and chefs play a vital role in keeping our people fed, growing our economy, and preserving our shared heritage. In that spirit, I invite all Marylanders to submit their best recipes and join us in one of our most cherished annual traditions."
To be considered for the cookout, recipes must include at least 50% locally sourced products and should aim to partner with at least one Maryland farmer, waterman, or other producer. Chefs are encouraged to submit recipes that showcase how the average Maryland family can prepare tasty and nutritious meals using locally produced ingredients.

Recipes will be selected in four categories: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salad, and dessert. The criteria for selection include simplicity, creativity, availability of ingredients, geographic representation, and maximum use of local products.
Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks emphasized the importance of supporting local farmers and watermen by stating that "the annual Buy Local event serves as a reminder of the many easy and simple ways Marylanders can prepare fresh meals at home using locally grown ingredients."
In addition to professional chefs and restaurants, culinary high school and college teams are also encouraged to submit their recipes. Selected teams will have the opportunity to provide, prepare and share their dish at the Governor's cookout. The department's website has complete rules of entry and additional information for interested participants. All recipes must be submitted through an online form by May 19.
It is important to note that previously submitted recipes are not eligible for consideration. However, the department will provide a $200 stipend towards the cost of ingredients for selected recipes.
Chefs with any questions or concerns can contact Maryland's Best Director of Special Projects, Kristin Hanna, at kristin.hanna@maryland.gov.
The Buy Local Cookout is not only a celebration of delicious food but also a way to support local farmers and producers while promoting healthy and sustainable eating habits. With the deadline for recipe submissions approaching, Marylanders are encouraged to get creative and showcase their love for local ingredients.
