ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 3, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture has recently received a generous funding of $16,000 from the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) to support the Maryland Market Money (MMM) program. This funding, which represents contributions made over the past five years by community members through fundraising efforts, highlights the strong collaboration between organizations and their collective commitment to ensuring equitable food access for Maryland families while also strengthening local farms.
The SMADC, a division of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, has been a long-standing partner of the MMM program. Their continued support and contribution to this initiative demonstrate their dedication to addressing food insecurity and supporting local farmers.
Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks expressed his gratitude towards SMADC for their partnership and contribution to the MMM program. He stated, "This funding underscores our shared commitment to addressing food insecurity, strengthening Maryland's agricultural economy, and ensuring that farmers are supported as they feed our communities." The Department remains committed to investing in the success of MMM and supporting both farmers and families in need.

The MMM program is a statewide food access initiative that aims to combat food insecurity by matching federal nutrition benefits such as SNAP, WIC, and FMNP dollar-for-dollar for purchases at participating farmers' markets, farm stands, and CSA sites. In 2024 alone, MMM provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in matching incentives, increasing access to fresh and local food for families while also directing vital sales to Maryland farmers.
Funded by the State of Maryland, federal grants, local governments, and community donations, MMM plays a crucial role in strengthening the state's agricultural economy while ensuring equitable food access for all. For more information on the program or how to get involved, please contact Food Access Programs Administrator Cristina Berthelot at cristina.berthelot@maryland.gov.
