ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 20, 2024) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has joined forces with Maryland Public Television (MPT) to create an interactive environmental science resource for elementary and middle school students. Welcome to Your Watershed is now available on MPT's popular Thinkport educational website, thanks to the partnership between MDA and MPT.

The collaboration between MDA and MPT ensures that Welcome to Your Watershed is a reliable and high-quality resource for teachers, parents, and students alike. This valuable resource aims to spark curiosity and interest in conserving the natural resources that we depend on.

According to MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks, teaching children about how nature works is crucial in instilling a sense of responsibility towards protecting our environment. He believes that Welcome to Your Watershed will showcase the importance of protecting local waterways through our actions on land. The resource also highlights the efforts of farmers in preserving water resources and provides ways for students to contribute to the conservation of the Chesapeake Bay watershed in their daily lives.

Initially developed as a simple card game by MDA, Welcome to Your Watershed features bright graphics and an important conservation message. With the help of MPT's education department, the virtual game has been expanded and transformed into a meaningful instructional resource that takes students on an engaging journey into the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Through this resource, students will learn about how water cycles throughout our planet, identify factors that affect its movement, explore the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and understand the significance of preserving natural resources in Maryland watersheds. Additionally, supplemental enrichment activities are available to teach students about Maryland agriculture and its impact on the Chesapeake Bay. Each resource comes with a detailed Teacher's Guide and aligns with national and state standards for easy integration into the curriculum.

The Office of Resource Conservation at MDA provided guidance and resources for this Thinkport project. Funding was made possible by a grant from the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund for agricultural outreach.
