Maryland: Cost-Share Grants Available for Fall Manure Transport and Injection

Trending...
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 25, 2025) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture is reminding farmers that they have the opportunity to receive cost-share funding for their fall manure management projects. This funding is available to help cover expenses associated with hauling all types of manure to fall-planted crop fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels.

In addition, grants are also available to offset costs related to injecting liquid manure into the soil. This practice not only helps prevent nutrient runoff, but also reduces odors.

All fall livestock manure transport and injection projects must be completed by December 15, 2025. Farmers are encouraged to submit their claims for payment to the department's Conservation Grants Office by January 15, 2026. Claims for poultry manure must be submitted within 40 days of the final transport.

The program offers several highlights for farmers looking to participate:

- Up to $28 per ton is available for transporting poultry manure to qualifying fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels or alternative use projects.

- Cost-share grants are available for transporting dairy and livestock manure to qualifying fields, covering up to 87.5% of eligible costs.

- Both FastTrack and standard transport options are available for both poultry and dairy/livestock manure.

- Farmers can receive up to $45 per acre for costs associated with injecting liquid manure into the soil. However, it should be noted that poultry manure is not eligible for this option due to its low moisture content.

Interested farmers can apply for FastTrack grants by downloading the application from the department's website. For those who do not qualify for FastTrack, they can contact their local soil conservation district to apply for standard grants which require pre-approval before any manure is transported or injected.

The Department's Conservation Grants Program oversees the administration of these grants. Applicants must be in good standing with the program and in compliance with Maryland's nutrient management regulations. For those in need of assistance in finding a poultry manure source, a listing of poultry manure brokers can be found on the department's website.

For more information on this program, farmers can contact the Manure Management Program at 410-841-5864. With these cost-share funding opportunities, the Maryland Department of Agriculture hopes to encourage farmers to properly manage their manure and protect the environment.
