ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 16, 2024) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture is urging farmers to take advantage of cost-share funding available for fall manure transport and injection projects. These funds can help cover expenses associated with hauling all types of manure to fall-planted crop fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels.
According to the department's Conservation Grants Office, grants are also available to offset costs related to injecting liquid manure into the soil. This practice not only helps prevent nutrient runoff but also reduces odors.
Farmers are reminded that all fall manure transport and injection projects must be completed by December 15, 2024. Claims for payment should be submitted by January 15, 2025.
The program offers several highlights for farmers, including up to $28 per ton for transporting poultry manure to qualifying fields or alternative use projects that can safely use or temporarily stockpile the product. Cost-share grants for transporting dairy and livestock manure cover up to 87.5% of eligible costs.

Both FastTrack and standard transport options are available for both poultry and dairy/livestock manure. Farmers can receive up to $45 per acre for costs associated with injecting liquid manure into the soil. However, it should be noted that poultry manure is not eligible for this option due to its low moisture content.
FastTrack applications for poultry and dairy/livestock manure can be downloaded from the department's website. In cases where applicants are not eligible for FastTrack grants, farmers should contact their local soil conservation district to apply for standard grants. These grants require pre-approval before any manure is transported or injected.
The Manure Management Program at the Maryland Department of Agriculture administers these grants. Applicants must be in good standing with the program and comply with Maryland's nutrient management regulations. For those in need of assistance finding a poultry manure broker, they can visit https://littr.io/ or contact the department's Manure Management Program at 410-841-5864.
With these cost-share funding options available, the Maryland Department of Agriculture hopes to encourage farmers to properly manage manure and reduce its impact on the environment.
