ABERDEEN, Md., May 29, 2024 ~ In a groundbreaking move, the budtenders and shift leads at Ascend Cannabis have voted to join Teamsters Local 570, making them the first workers in the state to join the Teamsters Union. This decision was met with overwhelming support from the employees, who are eager to address important issues such as better compensation, guaranteed minimum hours, fair scheduling processes, and a safe workplace.

Sean Cedenio, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 570, expressed his excitement for this new partnership. "We look forward to addressing the issues that are of the utmost importance to these workers," he stated. "Chief among those issues are better compensation, guaranteed minimum hours, a fair process for scheduling, and a safe workplace."

Peter Finn, Teamsters Western Region International Vice President and Food Processing Division Director, also congratulated the workers on their achievement. "Congratulations to these workers for a truly remarkable, groundbreaking achievement," he said. "We've won strong union contracts at Ascend dispensaries in other states, and we look forward to doing the same thing here."

During the organizing drive, Ascend customers showed their support for the workers by wearing "vote yes" buttons inside the dispensary leading up to the vote. Ryan Bennett, an Ascend worker on the organizing committee, shared his gratitude for this support. "Our struggle really resonates with a lot of people around here – especially those who give us their business," he explained. "These are people we've built personal relationships with. So, to be able to deliver this win, not only for us but for them as well, this is a huge milestone."
