The Outer Rim's Panel Lineup Asks the Hard Questions: Why We Tell These Stories, and What It Actually Takes to Live Among the Stars

The Outer Rim's panel track moves beyond the screen: Friday explores why science fiction functions as psychological rehearsal, Saturday tackles Afrofuturism as awakening and AI's disruption of authorship, and the festival closes with its signature discussion, "A Mastery Required for Residency" : the four pillars of off-world habitation and what it truly takes for humans to live among the stars, not just travel there.

BALTIMORE - Marylandian -- BALTIMORE, MD — Alongside its full slate of independent science fiction films, The Outer Rim: The Off-World Experience returns August 28–30, 2026 at the Baltimore Science Fiction Society with a panel lineup built to push past spectacle and into substance.

Kicking things off Friday, August 28 at 7:20 PM, "Why Science Fiction? The Genre That Thinks So We Don't Have To" examines why speculative storytelling functions as psychological rehearsal — the mind practicing survival at civilizational scale.

Saturday's programming digs deeper. At 2:35 PM, "What If? Afrofuturism and the Outer Rim of Imagination" — with speakers Willis Wanyiri Kamau and Cathleen Dean — asks whether Afrofuturism is escape or awakening, exploring liberated futures through film, mythology, and ancestral memory. At 5:05 PM, "Awakening the Algorithm: AI, Filmmaking, & the New Divide" confronts the most disruptive tool cinema has ever faced, tracing the fault lines AI draws through authorship, access, and authenticity.

Closing the panel track at 5:45 PM is the festival's signature discussion, "A Mastery Required for Residency: The Off-World Experience." Where most space narratives fixate on the ships that carry us outward, this panel turns to the harder question: how we stay. Living beyond Earth means rebuilding, from scratch, every condition the human body has spent four billion years taking for granted — atmosphere, food chain, gravity, and the electromagnetic shield that keeps radiation from rewriting our DNA. The panel frames these as the four pillars of off-world habitation, the true engineering challenge behind every off-world story audiences love.

Panels are included with festival passes. Full schedule and tickets at http://theouterrimfest.com.
