TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 5, 2025 ~ Tampa General Hospital and the TGH Cancer Institute have recently been awarded accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), solidifying their position as leaders in cancer care in the region. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the academic health system's dedication to providing exceptional clinical care, promoting innovation, and prioritizing patient safety in stem cell transplant and cellular therapy.

FACT is a nonprofit organization that sets standards for high-quality medical and laboratory practices in cellular therapies, specifically the transplantation of living cells into the body. The accreditation process ensures that a program meets internationally recognized standards and utilizes best practices in patient care, cell collection, processing, and administration. This recognition is highly regarded by regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies, The Joint Commission, and international societies.

The TGH Cancer Institute's cellular therapy program offers cutting-edge treatments such as Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and stem cell transplants for patients with aggressive blood cancers like lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and leukemias. Dr. Ivan Borrello leads this program as medical director of Myeloma, Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), and Cell Therapies within the TGH Cancer Institute. He joined Tampa General in 2022 from Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Borrello shared his excitement about this achievement saying, "As we work towards developing options for patients with complex cancers, we have been focused on offering novel immune-based therapies to elevate our Bone Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapies Unit into a nationally and internationally recognized program. Dr. Abraham Schwarzberg, executive vice president, chief of Oncology, president of the Tampa General Provider Network (TGPN), and co-vice president of Clinical and Translational Research at the TGH-USF Health Office of Clinical Research, emphasized the significance of this accreditation stating, "This recognition not only affirms TGH's leadership in cellular therapy but also offers patients the assurance that their care is delivered with exceptional expertise, precision, and compassion."
