ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 30, 2024) ~ The Maryland Department of Agriculture has issued a warning to pet owners in the state regarding a recent recall of pet food. The recall involves Morasch Meat's Northwest Naturals brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw & frozen pet food, which has tested positive for the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus.
According to testing conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratories and the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University, a house cat in Washington County contracted H5N1 and died after consuming the raw frozen pet food. Further tests confirmed that there was a genetic match between the virus found in the pet food and the infected cat.
Morasch Meats, a company based in Portland, Oregon, has voluntarily recalled its Northwest Naturals brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw & frozen pet food. The affected product is packaged in 2-pound plastic bags with "Best if used by" dates of 05/21/26 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1. It was distributed nationwide through various distributors in states such as Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington in the United States. It was also sold in British Columbia, Canada.
