ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 19, 2024) ~ In a successful end to the year, the Maryland Board of Public Works has approved four new easements through the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation during their meeting on December 18th. This initiative, which aims to permanently protect prime farmland, has resulted in the conservation of approximately 788 acres across Dorchester, Kent, and Talbot counties. The investment for this project totaled over $3 million.
According to Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks, the commitment of farmers to preserve their land is crucial for the future of agriculture in Maryland. Not only does it support local communities, but it also ensures the resources necessary for a thriving agricultural economy. This dedication is essential for the continued growth and sustainability of Maryland's agriculture.

Established in 1977 as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture, the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation purchases agricultural preservation easements from willing farmers to protect prime farmland and woodland forever. The newly approved easements will help maintain the state's agricultural landscape while also promoting local food production and sustaining rural livelihoods.
A chart detailing the easements broken down by county can be viewed on the foundation's website. With these new additions, Maryland has already achieved its goal of conserving 30% of state land by 2030 as outlined in the Maryland Beautiful Act passed by the General Assembly in 2023. These newly-approved easements will contribute towards meeting the next goal of conserving 40% of state land by 2040.
